Join Freelance Police, Sam (don’t call him a cartoon dog) and Max (a hyperkinetic, rabbity thing) as they pursue a runaway carnival Bigfoot across America’s quirky underbelly. Based on Steve Purcell’s unconventional cult comic books, Sam & Max takes you on an irreverent road trip adventure that will put hair on your back. Collide with tacky tourist traps and intimidate their bizarre denizens.
This demonstration version of Sam & Max challenges you to solve the first of many challenging puzzles that await you in the full game. If you've enjoyed playing the demonstration version of Sam & Max and would like to order the full game, please check with your local software retailer or call 1-800-98-LUCAS.

Controls
Controlling Sam in the game is very straightforward. You can cycle through the various possible actions — walk, talk, pick up, use, look at — by pressing the TAB key. To walk around, cycle through the verbs until the hand with two fingers pointing downward is showing, and then click the mouse button where you wish to walk to. As you move the cursor around the screen, the cursor shape will animate to reflect whether or not you are able to interact with visible objects.
For example, to talk to Max, TAB through the verbs until the mouth cursor appears. Then move the cursor over Max; as you do so, the mouth will open to indicate that you are positioned over an object that can be spoken to. Click the mouse button to initiate the action.
In addition to the verbs above, you can also ask Max to help you out. Either click on the Max icon in your inventory (available by clicking the icon in the lower-left corner) or TAB to the use icon and use Max, and your cursor will change to Max’s head. Then simply position Max over the object you need help with, and Max will see what he can do to help.
Solutions to Common Problems
When I run Sam & Max, it claims it doesn’t have enough space left to play sounds.
Sam & Max is probably using up almost every last scrap of memory, and there is no room left over in your system to initialize the Sound Manager. To fix this, you should make sure you have quit out of any other applications that may be taking up valuable memory. You might also need to disable some control panels and/or extensions, or lower Sam & Max’s Preferred memory partition (if you have it raised up).
Try as I might, I can’t seem to find enough free memory to run Sam & Max.
It is possible that with certain system configurations, there may not be a way to free up enough RAM to run Sam & Max on an 8MB machine. In this case, we recommend that you play with virtual memory turned ON. Go into the Memory control panel and click the “On” button next to the virtual memory section. Then use the arrow control to adjust the amount of virtual memory you wish to use. For best performance, we recommend setting your virtual memory to the lowest possible value. Once you have virtual memory turned on, you will get a warning when you launch Sam & Max; simply press on in spite of the warning and you will be able to play, with some performance degradation.
The sound breaks up and stutters during play.
You probably either have virtual memory turned on in the Memory control panel or you are running with a third-party RAM extender utility installed. In either case, the solution is to disable the offender. To disable virtual memory, select the Memory control panel and click the “Off” button in the virtual memory section. To disable your RAM extender utility, use the Extensions Manager control panel to turn it off before playing. In either case, you will need to restart your Mac for the changes to take effect.
